A buffer is a circuit where the output is the same as the input. But the secret is that the buffer circuit has a very high input impedance and very a low output impedance.
Without getting into many details this eventually means that it improves the high frequency response of your overall pedal chain so that you don't lose your tone as your highs aren't getting sucked up. It can be also built in a different enclosure with the addition of a footswitch (on request).
